A major update to Windows 10 has been released this week.

It is called the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

I believe this is a complete replacement of Windows.

I started to install it on a fairly powerful PC, and I have 150mbps Virgin cable Broadband, and so far it has been running for well over an hour and is still at the stage of "Preparing to install updates" (at 90%)

So if you do have Windows 10 then watch out for this update and be prepared to do very little on your PC for a while (I know it says you can carry on working while it is installing but I prefer to leave the PC alone till it has finished)

If you have a few hours when you are not going to use your PC then maybe go in to the "Check for Updates" option in Settings and try to "kick off" the update.

Ah, the fail creators update : www.theregister.co.uk/2017/10/18/windows_fall_creators_update_is_here_and_the_news_is_both_good_and_bad

Can't spot anything I want from it.
Just this second started my update
noooooooo
What does Chris advise here ?

Do we to do it, and if we do, is better done during the night perhaps ?
I think I have just had it
It might have updated automatically...how can I check what version I am using at the present time ?
Forced my desktop to install it yesterday, will have a go with the Laptop at the weekend. If you are using Edge you may have trouble launching it after the upload. Make sure you have a second browser installed as back up before launching it. Only microsoft could issue an upgrade that wipes out it's own browser. Sorted my kernel out this morning.
mine is up to date as at 5pm..so if it updated it did so all by itself... good lappie
"What does Chris advise here?"

Nothing that anyone else could find in a few seconds on Google.
You should always update to the latest version, as that has the most up to date security built into it.
But I would wait for 10.0.2, when any bugs have been mended. Probably in a week or two.
dave....we have grown to trust Chris's advice on here !
Good idea Gromit !
I’ll leave it for now I have updates turned completely off. It took me long enough to put it back to the way I need it to run last time. Once the dust has settled and I’m in a generous mood I might look at it. Let the cannon fodder walk forward
Mikey - doesn't change the fact he gets his info from Google.
Was that the "Royal" We. ?
What can you know about w10 if you are not running it?
Ahh Google Foo.
Mikey, Chris doesn't use Windows 10.

To find your current Version, open the Search box bottom-left, type - winver - hit enter.

I upgraded my 2 machines yesterday - why not? They took about 90 mins each to complete the process. No problems with Edge - or anything else for that matter. Will I use everything in there? No, but if I decide I want to in the future, I can.

For anyone wanting to know it is version 1709.
I still use Windows 7. Do I need Windows 10?
I have just checked and I am on version 1703 !
Tilly - it's up to you. You haven't had "Mainstream support" (new features) since it ended on Jan 13th 2015.

If you're happy with it, Win 7 will continue to get "Extended support" (security updates) until Jan 14th 2020, so it's perfectly ok to use until then.
