Contacts On Sim Or Phone

If I buy a new phone, are my contacts on the SIM or in the phone? Current phone is Motorola Moto G version 3, thinking of buying version 6, would be nice if I can just put SIM in and all contacts are there.

Motorola used to do a really good app called Migrate, which transferred everything. I went from Moto 1 to 3 really easily.

However Motorola sold their mobile business to Lenovo. It is still called a Moto, but it's not a Motorola.

I believe that Migrate has been dropped, so I suspect you will have to enter everything again.

Do you have a google account??
If so, is your phone connected to it and have you got "sync" turned on??
If the answer is yes to all of the above, then when you get a new phone, simply log into your google account and all your contacts, etc will be automatically transferred onto your new phone.
