It seems the whole world has a smart phone except me !
If I just go to a shop I don't really trust them to give me impartial advice
I need a phone that does all the apps - parking - tickets - payments etc
I have only ever needed to make one phone call once in goodness knows
how long ( I had to ask the station staff to call a taxi for me ! ) so if I make
any it will be a once in a lifetime event :-) Since I do have a tablet and I eat
through data on that I guess practically unlimited would be good. What do
I need to ask for in the shop. I don't want to message anyone or really for them
to message me in any volume whatsoever

Have a look at this
Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
Then you need a SIM card, no idea how much data you will need but try Giff Gaff, from £7.50 a month for 2GB data

Service is probably more important than handset.
Normally I'd say the more you pay out on a newer model the better tge functionality will be. But read comparsion/review websites before shopping.
In your case, new to these 'smart' phones, you might be better off getting a cheaper older handset model and getting used to it first. Upgrade when you're more experienced.

Here's the phone I've got. Most suppliers were originally offering it around £130, with a few charging between £100 and £120. However Argos are now clearing it for £70:

(I know people who've got £400+ phones and I can't see that they've got anything that mine hasn't)
It's got a a very good camera, an excellent screen, long battery life and is a doddle to use.
Once you've got a phone you'll need either a contract or a pay-as-you-go deal to go with it. I use Asda Mobile, as they're one of the cheapest and their customer service is excellent. (If you've got any queries simply give them a call. They answer their phones almost instantly, putting you through to really knowledgeable people here in the UK). You can see their prices here:
