I have a printer which uses 4 cartridges and as have run out of black could I just put in a magenta which I have to hand to give me some sort of copy of page I need to copy or does the printer recognise that I have put a wrong colour in.

Probably would recognise wrong cartridge
You can only try. As you haven't told us the make and model we would just be guessing
Usually, the black cartridges is bigger than the others.

Thank you for all replies. It is an Epson XP215 and have stuck a magenta cartridge in but nothing printing and a large X comes up on the in level black cartridge so seems to me it does not take to the magenta one. Will haave to wait till next week to buy a new black cartridge
