I've been sent an attachment to my hotmail inbox (from a friend), I thought it was going to be just a few pages, he even says it's saved as 'word' documents, but I can't find anyway to open it, is it possible, or shall I give up already!!

Save the attachment locally then change the extension to .doc or .txt before viewing it. Or try forcing your computer into opening with Word or Notepad. Better still, get your friend to read a computer book about sending attachments as word documents since .dat is usually data.
