will a tv bought in america work in the uk?

Basically no. Wrong mains voltage and frequency.
..... and the US NTSC format is incompatible with the PAL format used in the UK.
being American....all TV's (sold now!) have auto sensing volatge detection...meaning it will work on anything from 110 to 440 (50/60hz)...the cheaper models are NTSC only, but the high end models are NTSC and PAL2 (Europe).

But this ins't your problem, the UK is going digital in 2008, so even TV's bought in the UK won't work then!

Get a digital LCD or PLASMA TV!!!
