Sony DVD recorder
3 Answers
I have a new Sony RDR-HXD870, which I had professionally set up, to my TV and VCR.
I have found out that I have to set up the inbuilt electronic programme guide (epg) before I can make a timed recording using this method.
Is this difficult to do?

If your recorder is set up to use just the Freeview signal then pressing Guide will bring up the EPG. Navigate using left right up and down buttons to the programme you want to record and press the enter button. This will bring up another screen with the details, start /stop times channel series link ( you need to set this to ON if you're recording a series such as Holby City, otherwise you could set the timer to weekly recording ) etc.
If this is OK pressing enter again gives another option (can't remember what it says something to do with changes in scheduling may move this recording time) press enter again and you'll go back to the EPG with a red clock symbol on the timeline to indicate it's now in the timer list.
NB you can't do this if the prog is about to start, the machine goes into record standby about a minute before the start of a programme. In this case just press the instant record on the remote, pressing again sets a 30 min. timer, third press 1hour timer and so on up to 3 hours I think.
Now if you want to make a manual recording you need to press the Timer button on the remote. This will show you the list of programmed recordings, use the arrow keys to go to the empty one at the bottom and press enter.
You can now set the tuner / channel /input (for recoring from a satellite box) date , start time etc just like with a VCR. When finished press enter and you should see it in the timed recordings list.
