Printer/Laptop Connection

I have an ADVENT 5421 laptop (received as a present for Christmas) and I am having difficulty in connecting up to my printer, which is a LEXMARK X5470.
The screen tells me to check my power and USB leads which I have done, all to no effect.
Can anyone help me with this problem.

did you connect the printer and then try installing the software?

If so wrong way round

remove all the software using add remove programs in control panel and then reinstall the software with the printer disconnected and do not connect it until the software tells you to
