Ripping a DVD to my hard drive?

Is this easy or is there security stuff on the discs to stop you? If it is possible what software is recommended - free software please :)

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I have tried to various programs all promising to 'back up a DVD to my hard drive' i have found the only one that works is DVDx it is quite complicated but comes with some helpful information. Try this site for it: www.labdv.com/dvdx/ you may to fiddle around a bit with the settings and the results can be hit and miss.
my dad swears by a program called copy zoom or something very similar, it is available at dixons and although he claims the program has security on it to stop u copying a film etc, the manufacture only had to remove it from the retail version for obvious piracy reasons, and offer a patch on there webdite to upgrade it and remove the security issues. apparently it now copies about 70 to 80% of films to a blank dvd
