As an ancient technophobe I seem to be unable to discover how to upgrade my ID picture from a grey face on AB. I would really appreciate some help please. Thanks

The key is to make sure that you use exactly the same email address on gravatar.com as you do on AB; it is the link between the 2 sites and lets AB find the picture you have set on gravatar so make sure that it is exactly the same.
Aalso make sure that in your AB profile you have avatar activated - click on My Profile in the top left corner of any page to get to your profile.
Finally wait a couple of minutes for the gravatar info to get through to AB, and be sure to use Ctrl-F5 or reload to update the page that you are displaying.
In future to change your avatar simply change it on gravatar and it will be automatically displayed on AB after a few minutes.
