Having said that it has water round most of it, with the Atlantic down one side and the large lake down the other.
It can be rather chilly with the cold wind, but not as bad as say Toronto.
Here is map showing all the water round SF

Woolies probably won't be required (emphasis probably) but it will be cool and somewhat damp (maybe like London?) You'll need a warm coat during the day, especially when the wind's blowing, which it always does. Winter months are the rainiest, but not overly so. All in all, fairly pleasant. As for things to do, my short list always includes the Embarcadero Waterfront, The Golden Gate Bridge and Park, Palace of Fine Arts, and my personal favorite, China Town. Depends on your tastes, obviously, but take a bus tour to wine country if you have the time... seen here: http://www.travelsf.com/

I've been to SF in December: cool, not really cold - certainly nowhere near freezing - but you'll need a sweater/jacket/similar warmish garment. It can be damp and it's often misty, but certainly not unpleasant. The winter sun gives a light similar to what you'd expect on a bright winter day in GB, but feels much warmer, especially if you're sheltered from the wind. Still my favourite US city - enjoy!
