Russian Visa

Its my birthday next week and I fancied going wild and visiting St Petersburg for the weekend. Found a lovely hotel (Petro Palace) at a cost I could afford, but then found out I need a visa - which'll take a month.

Sorry - this isn't really a question, more of a rant. Anyone know why we would need a visa for Russia?

Have you 'googled' Russian Visa and clicked on those links on the side.....they seem to promise a russian visa quickly - you do need a letter of introduction but they arrange this for you. I would suggest that Russia is keeping a strict hold on its border controls and on who is going in and out of their country - not a bad idea IMHO...

The USSR's official travel agency, Intourist, is alive and well in post-Soviet days. They can get you a visa within a period of 6 to 10 working days for �90. The same day service costs �140:

The vast majority of overseas countries (outside of the EU) require visitors to obtain a visa. These include such popular tourist destinations as India, Australia and (for many visitors) the USA. Some countries use the visa system to try to keep out 'undesirable aliens'. Others simply seem to use the system as a form of 'entry tax' on visitors. Russia simply seems to remain bogged down in Soviet-style bureaucracy

Different types of visas for Russia, but you need an official invitation from Russia. See http://www.russianvisas.org they issue invitations, and lots of advise.
