do i need a visa to enter  the usa, i have an italian passport but am living in the uk? my passport is a five year  and was issued in 2002

As an EU citizen you are entitled to enter the USA without a Visa for up to 90 days privided that you have a machine-readable passport. Since yours was issued in 2002 you should have one so it's ok.

Although, the American visa-waiver scheme is changing as of today (26 October) it does not apply to UK citizens or the majority of EU citizens so you are free to go! :-)
