Hi all. I have a general query regarding US visas. I intend to travel to the US & stay for 2 years, the maximum permitted on a J1 visa. I was wondering whether a J1 visa begins to run when it is granted by the Embassy or the time you enter into the country?? This is very important for me as I wish to have as long as possible in the position awaiting me in the US & determines when I apply for the visa! Thank you x

You may wish to see if the F1 Visa may better serve you. You can study, work (on a limited basis) and as long as your are enrolled in a course of study, it does not have an expiration. Check here as an example. http://usimmigration.visapro.com/F1-Student-Visa.asp
I believe I saw your post on another thread wherein you intend to study aviation in the US. Having been a life long professional pilot, now with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) be sure to check on the approval requirements for foreign students enrolled in aviation programs. Sadly, so much has changed in aviation since 9/11. Check www.faa.gov for one source. Best of luck and blue skies!
