Many, many years ago, my father told me on the phone that he'd got problems with swollen ankles. I urged him to see a doctor, as I knew that it was likely to be a circulatory problem, probably related to his heart. He asked me what the doctor might do. I told him that he'd probably say "Give up booze" and prescribe rat poison (Warfarin) for the rest of his life.
The next time I spoke to my father on the phone, he told me that he'd seen his GP in the morning and then been given ECG and heart echo tests at hospital on the same day, followed by seeing a consultant straight away. He told my father to give up the booze and prescribed Warfarin.
Maybe I should have been a doctor myself?
