If they want to change that they'll need to change the rules, at risk of alienating the Tea Party brigade even further.
The Democrat high command by comparison seem to have worked hard to enact Clilnton's nomination, which may have resulted in unfairness to Sanders. It's hard to say which party behaved better. (Someone more knowledgeable than me may be able to judge.)

jno.....Its my opinion that the GOP could have stopped Trump dead in his tracks, by allowing one of the other, less disagreeable candidates to stand forward and the others to stand aside and support him.
But they squabbled like cats in a sack amongst themselves, and let Trump n by the back door. More fool them !

There's no guarantee that such a "unity" candidate could have emerged, unless it was agreed on before Trump was looking like the eventual winner he turned out to be. And even if such a candidate *did* emerge, would enough people have voted for him? Carson and, perhaps to a lesser extent, Fiorina were drawing their support from people who turned to Trump once they withdrew. The only other potential opponent able to go the distance was Ted Cruz, who was even more hated by the GOP leadership (and everyone else). And that left a bunch of candidates that simply didn't have the appeal to extend to enough voters to challenge Trump. Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, even Marco Rubio (whose time may come again, perhaps). And no-one else who could have ran wanted to.
Trump's victory was well-earned, and well-deserved, and difficult to "stop". Put simply, enough people felt he was a choice worth making. The GOP party was broken already, and that is the void that he filled.

Yes he moves in a different firmament to 'normal' candidates. If he is still standing at all (just) after everything he's said and has been said about him thus far, which would have had others heading for the hills, then short of being outed as the real head of ISIS it's hard to see what would actually, definitively, finish him off beforehand.
Thank you all for your comments.
Trump's best performance by far, but undone by his not having said "yes" to the "will you accept...?" question.
I'm surprised, seeing that fitness for office and security were discussed in the debate, that no-one on the thread has mentioned the Clinton Foundation and the private servers.
The difference between the candidates is, in my opinion, that the odious Trump in his own corrupt way DOES care something about America and its people, while the odious Hillary in her corrupt way does not.
