No I don't think the status of Polish Immigrants changed at all, especially someone who has been here as long as she has.

My opinion? Her perception is her reality. She may be wrong, she may even be silly, but people aren't exactly stepping forward to reassure her are they? Including yourself - "there are 27 other countries to choose from" rather than "No, you're wrong, you're welcome here."

Again I say, she wasn't booed!! She was being disagreed with. I think members of the audience were saying that, Poles are not being discriminated against and, she was wrong. That's all. It shows support for the Poles, quite rightly.

Where could some EU immigrants be getting the idea that they're not welcome in the UK? From three sources:

1) British people who, though they believe EU immigrants are still welcome, don't take the trouble to say so

2) the British Government who, though it wrote the document (linked to by naomi) in the days leadsing up to July 11 and published it on July 11, all this time it was under Cameron as PM. At the same time of writing Theresa May was campaigning to be the next PM, declaring that the fate of EU immigrants was an open question, to be used as a bargaining chip with the EU. Since assuming office she has said nothing to change this, which for example (there are many others) led The Spectator to publish this lead article on July 23rd:

3) those racists in Britain whose primary motivation for voting Leave was to get the immigrants out and who now, having won, feel empowered to push this agenda



It is great that Tashi and Naomi still think Polish and other EU immigrants are welcome here. I would invite everyone who thinks likewise to actually tell EU immigrants that they're welcome, rather than assume they already know that. Then perhaps there will be fewer immigrants like the woman on Question Time who believe that they're no longer welcome.

I agree with Chrissa. I don’t think she was being booed, and appears to be taking the Brexit vote personally.

I don’t have a problem with the immigrants staying who have integrated and are supporting themselves, we just can’t accommodate any more people. And for me, those that are not fully supporting themselves are the ones who are not welcome.

Thanks naomi, an interesting article which I had not seen before, nor the Telegraph article it references (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/10/07/every-eu-migrant-can-stay-after-brexit-600000-will-be-given-amne/).

Even so, great news that it is, it's hardly a high-profile, ringing statement from the government (e.g. Theresa May or her cabinet), rather unnamed senior sources quoting unnamed official research.

But let's say that's one of my three reasons that immigrants like this woman may be feeling unwelcome dealt with. That just leaves the other two.

I just popped in to the desktop version to see that you awarded it to New Judge, whose answer contains "We don’t hate foreigners, we don’t want to see the repatriation of people who settled here in good faith taking advantage of the prevailing EU rules." - good to see that you agree with that. Your OP ("there are 27 other countries to choose from") didn't imply that you thought that way.

yes I don't want any repatriation etc, of course not. This is a silly woman taking brexit personally, I am reacting to that. We can all live where we choose and I was merely pointing out that if she feels unwelcome there are other EU nations to choose from.
