Toads

Cleaning garden up for winter I found a toad,now my garden has a six foot fence with gravel boards,haven,t got a pond so how did it get in and as it has now disappeared where has it gone

Someone toad him to jump the fence, and now he's hopped it.

Toads don`t live in ponds so you don`t need one of those to have toads. They can dig though (I remember finding one as a child when my grandfather was digging up a field of potatos) They like dry stone walls too. Maybe it came in when it was little (under the fence) and then grew

Apart from during breeding, toads do not need to spend too much time near ponds. It is probably hiding under a stone or in some loose soil. Was it fully grown?
They can squeeze through very small holes (maybe under your fence) or perhaps a neighbour threw him over the fence!

Yes it is fully grown but I wondered if it has been living under the rockery

It never ceases to amaze me where I find toads!
I've often found them in seemingly impossible places, like under heavy flagstones and rocks.
It wouldn't surprise if your toad has managed to wriggle its way under a rock.
Often regarded as the gardeners friend, I try not to disturb them, especially when they may be settling in to hibernation.

Oh I certainly wouldn’t hurt it it is quite welcome to stay and eat all my slugs,I was just amazed to see it in the middle of a housing estate

We had a toad living in an inspection chamber to a drain for years at our last house, how he got under the cast iron lid I have no idea, and there was no other way in, he's probably still there as I believe they can live a very long time, and what on earth did he eat?
