over heating ford escort

i have a 1995 ford escort every time i take it for a spin the engine fan kicks in and ever now and again it seems to rev up by its self it seems to be very hot even after a short spin anyone any ideas on what the problem is???

Thermostat may be jamming - take it out ( very straightforward procedure but make sure the engine is cool when you do it ) ) and if that solves the problem then replace it - only a few pounds including the gasket.

i had the same problem in my clio ok it turned out i had the fans turned all the way to the left (off) but the temp was in the middle so after a bit of a spin it would get really hot so try turning the temp all the way down if its not already. Sorry if this doesnt help not the most mechanically minded when it comes to cars! hehe
