Peter, I believe the pope burnt in effigy is not the current one but Paul IV (or thereabouts), who was pope when the Lewes martyrs were burnt.

This story continues, with the individuals concerned arrested for Public Order offences.

As that law stands, it's highly unlikely that any of them will actually be charged, but it has drawn attention to their crass idea of humour, and identified them to the world at large.

It would be nice if every person who posts such garbage on social media would be given pause by this scenario, and think that the careless way they launch their puerile and loathsome stupidity on the wider world can come back and seriously bite them.

It would be nice, but it won't happen ...

indeed, Chrissa, one defence to charges of inflammatory speech is that the speaker had no idea anyone who wasn't there would hear. But if these clots were videoing and broadcasting their own fire, then they have fallen victim to social media madness and serve them right.
