Whilst not condoning this behaviour by a certain few, LBC radio decided to make this a news subject for their phone in.

Having listened to this I was surprised at the way this behaviour was criticised as being part of our British (but mainly English) behaviour when we are abroad.
Two callers one a Black male and an Asian lady, who I suppose would demand that they were British born and bred, were amongst those who slagged off 'The Brit's' culture.

The Asian Lady criticised the way British women dressed when they were abroad, with their skimpy attire and tattooed arms. Whilst the Black fellow chose to link 'The Brit's' aggressive behaviour back to the days of our Empire.

Why is this sort of criticism of our behaviour and culture allowed, yet if we criticise other's cultures and their behaviour, we are classed as being racist? Indeed it would never be allowed to be the subject for a radio phone in.

AOG - // When are you going to admit that you are putting up a ridiculous argument, by just referring to Trevor MacDonald. //

That would be never, because reference to TM backs up the point I am making.

To be clear, you can take an educated guess at ethnicity based on accent - but a guess is all it can ever be, you cannot know for certain, and that is the only point I am making to you.

I think we have exhausted this aspect of the debate, I am sure you will agree, so let's leave it there, and see if the thread has any juice left from other contributors.
The argument over recognisable accents is daft. If someone speaks with any of the dialects one would normally associate with these islands, then assessment is impossible. If, however, I hear someone speaking with a West Indian accent, or an Indian accent, or a Chinese accent, it’s a pretty safe bet that the owners of those respective accents come from elsewhere.
Oi cum from silly Sussex boy the sea.

When I was a kid I had a mate from the local chess club who'd set up a business with his wife in technical translation and had an office the size of a kennel in Paris. (The chess club, by the way, was a front for the serious stuff: poker, backgammon and heavy drinking.)

Occasionally I'd be in a pub or wherever and try speaking French to him. "VE," he said on one such "I don't think much of your French accent, except that it's a damn sight better than your English one.".

Let AH wallow in his ridiculous Trevor MacDonald example, no one else agrees with him.
But first let us humour him:
Can anyone tell where Trevor MacDonald comes from by his accent?

The answer is no.

But if a person is speaking in a strong West Indian accent, (as in the case that I was referring to) then the answer is yes.
(Can anyone tell where Trevor Macdonold comes from by his accent)
Is it news at ten? :)
ANOTHEOLDGIT, can you mind on what day and time you heard the 'phone-in?

You do seem to be seriously vexed at a perfectly reasonable point I am making - that you cannot know with certainty the origin of someone based on how they speak.

That is all I am saying, and I use Trevor MacDonald as an example, because he sounds British, but is not British.

You are determined to gainsay my point, and ridicule me for it, instead of simply accepting that I may be right.

Oh, and as for saying '... no-one else agrees with him ...' - feel free to refresh your memory with these -

How do you know they were black if it was a radio phone-in?

Thought this was a phone-in? How do you know their colour and why do you think they would "demand" they were British born and bred. Would it matter when commenting on the behaviour of Brits abroad?

A black person from Liverpool tends to have a Liverpudlian accent!!

I remember how surprised I was when I discovered that the late, great W Indian cricket commentator Tony Cozier, who I’d listened to for years on TMS, was white :-)
10:35 Sun 28th Jul 2019

Again, AOG, as you can't tell much from an accent how would you know they were black or Asian?
10:38 Sun 28th Jul 2019

He has no idea who the callers were or where they were born but "knows" they would demand to be called British?
12:02 Sun 28th Jul 2019

So answer my questions then, seeing as I have your attention:
Why would someone black or assign demand to be seen as British? 1. Why have you assumed they weren’t?
2. Why, if they weren’t, would they demand to be seen as British.
Unless you can convince me otherwise, my points about your agenda and argument remain.

//I can’t think of a single white person who has a Caribbean accent. Please correct me if you can.//

I can and will correct you. My wife trained as a nurse 40 odd yrs ago and one of the student nurses in her set had a very pronounced Jamaican accent yet was white as an English Rose. Her father,a doctor in the Caribbean was black. It is not unknown to have 'white Caribbeans'
I would of liked the Mayor, Police and residents of Falkiriki, Rhodes to appear on the LBC and explain why they voluntarily turned their highly popular, thriving, bustling , vibrant resort into a sleepy ghost town. Two words, 'The British'. :-(
Of course, it has been reported in the past that football hooligans running amok in Europe ,before a major match ,are Brits just because they were shouting and jeering in English. They turned out to be mostly Germans apparently.
