Bird Identification

Discovered this poor dead bird sort of wedged at the bottom of an ivy, less than a metre off the ground.

Any suggestions as to type? A woodcock perhaps, given its long beak?

Not sure why the pic didn't open for me.

I take it I can chalk this one off as a visitor to my garden, albeit deceased. I gather the woodcock population is worryingly low. Such a shame for this little fellow.

What sort of habitat are you close to?.
I'm not an expert but have You considered snipe or jack snipe, just a thought.

Jno, I think those are North American birds.

From the shape of the beak I would say it's a woodcock

We live in the suburbs of Leigh-on-Sea with open countryside and woods nearby. According to the RSPB website, the species is fairly well spread around the country.
