I've got lots of pictures to upload to an ftp server.
I have the ftp server name, the port number, the username and the password, so I should be good to go.

Cept I've no idea what to do with that information. My computer is a Windows XP PC running Microsoft Office 2003.

Can anyonee scribble me out an idiots guid to what I need to do to upload these pics as mates, and colleagues ar waiting for them?

Thanks in advance for any help. Toby

you need software to contact the ftp server and do the uploading. I have used smartftp http://www.smartftp.com/ and it works pretty good. The smartftp also has tutorials: http://www.smartftp.com/support/howto/

I was under the impression it could be done without additional software. Someone in my office mentioned that it should be possible just using Internet Explorer...

Does this mean I'm going to have to go through a software purchase or online hunt. for the latest "freeware"?
you can use IE easily - you see how the URL of a webpage tends to start "http:", just swap that for "ftp:", and the name of the site to which you are uploading. A box should appear prompting for passwords etc. Should be self-explanatory from there
yes, it's possible to do it directly in internet explorer.

you should have a username, a pasword and the name of the ftp server (something like ftp.yourdomain.co.uk)

if you type into your internet explorer address bar...

ftp://username:[email protected]

it should do the trick. once it's connected, the toolbar will change so that it looks more like the toolbar you get in windows explorer, so you'll have a 'folders' button. if you click that you should see the hierarchy of drives and folders down the left hand side. the ftp connection should appear in that hierarchy so you can simply drag and drop files onto the server.
I have found using IE for ftp to be a right ball-ache (especially if it uses a different port than 21) so that is why I pointed you in the direction of a !!**FREE**!! ftp client, namely smartftp. You can install it, use it once then uninstall it very easily.
