Not in Scotland it isnt.I have heard of people out in the USA with the surname,but it is probably the same as people called Starsky or Kaye.When immigrants to the USA at Ellis Island were asked their names,they told the immigration guys their names orally.So if i told the guy my name was Stamanasskoviskovich the guy would write down Starman.That was your name from now on.

The Oxford Names Companion lists 'Haggis' as a Scots surname, being a habitation name from any of the numerous places with that name in the Lowlands. They, in turn, got their name from the Northern Mediaeval English word 'hag', meaning 'clearing'.

The ONC goes on to state "There does not seem to be any direct connection with the vocab. word denoting the typical dish of the region, although this word is itself of uncertain origin".

With regard to how common (or otherwise) the name is, a BT Phone Book search for the whole of Midlothian (including Edinburgh) doesn't find a single subscriber with the surname 'Haggis', although there's just one 'Haggishampton' listed.

I have a very old friend named Terry Haggis who incidentally shares my birthday. He is a great fellah and his wife and 4 daughters are the full Welsh version of lovely. He and they are, also, Welsh speakers.
