Why Do Documentaries And Reality Shows Have To Show Clips Of What's Coming Up?

They spend about 2 or 3 minutes at the beginning of every show, showing clips of what's coming up, why? I'm sure this never used to happen and I don't need to know, I will take it as it comes.

Michael Portillo's rail journeys not only have loads of junk before the title comes up, but then there is a run through of what you are going to see as well!! I got really fed up when the Antiques Roadshow started to do it too. It spoils the show.
I presume they do it because we have followed the US example of TV being financed and controlled by commercial interests, so everything is geared to grabbing the attention of the lowest common denominator and keeping them glued to the same channel for as long as possible: the programme content is not valued apart from its being able to keep the consumers, so programmes are dumbed down and any interruption to their attentions span is combatted by 'coming up' and after the break 'here's where we were, in case you've forgotten.' Mrs Thatcher's dream really, bread and circuses will help them not to think.
