I have a leylandii conifer hedge on one side of the garden, with a small pond about 12 feet away. I sat nearby and watched a female gold crest making repeted trips , backwoods and forwards from the hedge to the pond.
It was lovely to watch, but I was wondering what it was doing.

I think you have hit it Emmie.
On checking, on their diet, they eat gnats, amoung other things, which breed in the pond.
