Are Boris & Priti Doing Enough?
36 Answers
At least 1,000 men, women and children were reportedly spotted landing on the south coast yesterday. If these numbers are correct, it would have shattered the previous daily record of 828, recorded on 21 August. But Home Office sources were today briefing that was an over-estimate and the likely official number will be about 740, merely the second highest daily total ever.'
So that's OK then?
Only one MP: Redcar Tory backbencher Jacob Young asked:
"not unreasonably, whether the Government could be doing more to stop the landings. The answer he got from Boris Johnson must rank as among the most complacent given by any prime minister from the despatch box in modern times.'
'The issue is, very sadly, our friends across the Channel in France are faced with a very difficult problem: large numbers of people who want to come to this country. We are doing everything we can to encourage the French to do the necessary and impede their passage,' said Johnson."
So the it's the French who are at fault, is that a fact ?

Pat, any coming from Syria have travelled practically the length of Europe to get to the English Channel. They reached safety when they landed in Greece or wherever they were dropped off. These are not destitute refugees. They are spending thousands on their tickets to the fabled land of milk and honey.

/The people coming from the safety of France are economic migrants./
Not true, Naomi. Many are genuine refugees. Lots from Syria apparently. I think there should be far more control on our beaches, more holding facilities and those that are economic immigrants should be shipped back out to EU.These boats are also coming in on the east coast from Holland.
And yes I am compassionate and pleased to be so. Don't forget I have personal links to immigrants who came here with nothing escaping from dreadful circumstances and were welcomed and contributed greatly to the UK. I don't have compassion for economic migrants.

To answer your question, NO, they are not doing nearly enough. This has long term permanent ramifications. Social care will suffer, and future generations will pay a price for this tardy, lacklustre, dithering. Human rights legality shenanigans tie the hands and minds of those that try to force this issue.
Naomi, Syrian refugees are not classed as economic migrants. No they are not destitute but that doesn't take away their destitute status. Probably they wish to escape the EU though. I would! (Light hearted statement). My point is as refugees if they landed they are entitled to refugee status. They have a right to stay.
pat: According to the Guardian, smugglers are charging as much as £3,500. Could this be why they are 'destitute' ?
