I was once told that solar panels would coist around 7000 for the average 3 bedroom house and it would take about 10 years to recoup your money,

Can't help with wind energy. (not the sort you are interested in)
if you find that you can't afford the installation of personal reuseable energies, then you could just change to a company who guarentees that all their energy is from renewable sources. This is what I have just done.

Try searching for "the good energy company" and see if you can switch. It is not particularly cheaper, it was in fact no different than sweb, but I would rather pay a reuseable company than not.

I found them after reading a really good book by friends of the earth called: "save cash and the planet." It was full of excellent ideas for both....
In fact, here it is: http://www.good-energy.co.uk/

also, I forgot to say I borrowed the book from my library so you could order it from yours if they don't have it.
yes you can get grants - and I believe comet or curry (can't remember which) are now selling photovoltaic cells
The grants seem to be a bit intermittent; they get a wad of money, grant it and then there's nothing available till the next lot.

I'd go for solar, not wind. I believe using the sun to heat water (for hot water or central heating) is more efficient that converting to electricity.

Yes, pay-back time is usually 8-10 years.

There's a site that shows all the grants, by region. Can't remember the name, google for it.
