What is this 'owned' word that keeps popping up? I hate it! How can a skateboard etc. 'own' someone??? Please explain....TIA

when someone is owned, it usually mean that someone else has beaten them at something.....

As to where it orginated- no idea, sorry.

i think it relates to the mastery of something - if you, for instance sing a song better than the original - you have 'owned it'

You also see it a lot in the description or title of one of the many video clips on the Internet of a skateboarder, cyclist or gymnast for example, coming a cropper.
