My son and his wife have just bought an expensive leather suite and they have a dog and two cats. They can just about manage to keep the dog off the furniture but as soon as their backs are turned, the cats start scratching at the leather. Is there anything that they can do to prevent them from doing this

Yes, get rid of the cats.
I am not joking but get a good water pistol and keep it loaded, it will not harm the cats.
The cats were there first!

I agree that a water pistol is a good idea, I had to use one due to my moronic moggy waking me up regularly during the night so I would pet him.

However - your son should have considered the possibility of this happening with cats in the house.
I have the same problem. I have just bought some Pet Behave Spray from the pet shop but haven't tried it yet. It's worth a go at 2.75.
