Since the weekend I have a Blackbird in the garden, one of his wings has the flight feathers hanging down and he cannot fly, its all he can do to scramble up on one of the garden pots.I presume he was injured fighting with another bird. He spends much of his time digging out the weeds in the path and collecting insects, but if I go out he runs to the back of some bushes near the shed, I have put water out that he could get, I feel sorry for him that he can't fly. The garden is quite well protected ,no cats or rats, what else can I do ?
I had one that was behaving like that a couple of years ago. He was on the ground all of the time and just ran from bush to bush. I phoned a local wildlife centre and they suggested I tried to catch him in a net but I found that impossible. They would have come to collect him if I had managed to do it. Might be worth checking for wildlife rescue centres in your area.
If you know somewhere that sells live mealworms putting a few out for him will help but it's possible he won't recover. He is a sitting target for flying predators like sparrowhawks and even kestrels.
Sound like you've done all you can, really.
Sometimes trying to catch it, can cause added stress. Probably the least stressful way to catch it would be to set a trap for it, otherwise keep on doing what you've been doing
