Can anyone remember this TV programme? It was shown (I think) in the early 60s, a b/w BBC Sunday teatime serial about a French au pair, the dad was played by Richard Vernon and the theme went on to be top of the charts for ages, Acker Bilk's "Stranger on the Shore" - I think the series had the same name. Does anyone remember anything else about this, such as who played the French girl?

I don't know who played the French girl but I know that Patrick Cargill played a German SS officer.
Yes, I think the series was called "Stranger on the Shore" unfortunately I don't know any more about it but I think you could do a lot worse than try the Google search engine. Hope this is of some help.
The programme was called "stranger on the shore and the English family who looked after the French girl was the Googhs. Dennis Waterman and Franchesca Annis were in the programme. The title and final sequence showed the French girl walking along the shore line with the waves laping her feet. I cannot remember any more that this.
yes,it was wierd and acker bilk had a big hit with the theme tune(say no more)
It was actually called 'Owen MD'. Stranger on the shore was simply the theme music.
I can't add much to what has been said here, except to say I can remember that there was a follow up series called 'Stranger in the City', where she presumably moved to a city(!). For this one Aker Bilk did a more uptempo version of the theme tune. By the way, the theme tune to Owen MD was called 'Sleepy Shores' - hence the confusion from Buddha.
Sorry I just came across this question. It's funny you should ask this because I was just looking for information on the girl. Her name on the series was Marie-Helene and I am sure the actresses name was Jeanne Lebar. I remember having the bigest crush on her she was beautiful. I am not sure if I spelled her name correctly, since I cannot find anything about her now on the internet. Let me know if anyone else comes up with some information.

Thank you, RK! At last, after more than two years, I've found the answer! I looked up Jeanne Lebar at imdb.com, and found she was in fact Jeanne Lebars. See http://us.imdb.com/Title?0166060. I wonder whatever happened to her. I had a crush on her too! Thanks again.

Thanks for that loftboy! Glad to hear she is alive and well - how did you find out? Is she still acting? Don't suppose you have her phone number .... I bet she is still as gorgeous!

There's some more information on the series here:

I notice that Denis Gilmore was in it, amongst a number of other appearances at the time he later turned up as Dianne's brother in 'Crossroads' didn't he?

Hi, There was a sequel called "Stranger in the City". The French girl was played by a little-known actress called Jeanne le Bars who had some relatives living in the Bishopston area of Swansea! She used to come and visit them thats how I know her as I lived a few doors away. As far as I know she is now living in the London area. Hope this helps.
Hi, Forgot to add, I do have her address and tel no. Cheers.
Hi,
It was Jeanne Le Bars. The au pair's name was Marie-Hélène Ronson
I loved this series, even though I was only five years old!
Owen MD was SLEEPY SHORES Buddha
A follow up on this VERY old thread - someone pointed me at https://www.tvbrain.info/tv-archive?showname=Stranger+On+The+Shore&;type=lostshow which has links to 2 of the episodes (but you have to subscribe to their feed to view them).

If strandantiqu is still around, I would love to be able to communicate with Ms Le Bars. Perhaps you could you drop me an email to pluschap(at)ymail(dot)com?
