Grated cheese has its place the same as any other convenient ingredient for a recipe. I always use frozen mash or that Idahoan stuff these days as it saves effort and my back.

Where do you buy frozen mash, Vagus?
Ideal for my 91 year old Mum. She can't stand for long, and couldn't mash a pan.
Grated cheese is a godsend for her

Aunt Bessie does frozen mash and all the supermarkets do their own brand, £1 a bag in Iceland

I buy Sainsbury’s own brand and Aunt Bessies, hopkirk, both are really good, I’d never be able to make mash as smooth. It would be ideal for your mum :)

I freeze my own home made mashed potato and use it for duchesse potatoes or cottage/shepherd pies

Vagus, perhaps I would use those easy foods if I didn't have MrT who now does all the preparation and cooking. I can't stand for more than a few seconds, but I can walk about slowly. I have to keep on the move or sit or lay down.

Convenience foods are a boon for the disabled and frail. I chop my neighbour's swedes for her as she no longer has the strength to do so - I struggle with them sometimes.

Barry. Mr T has to do everything now. There's very little I can manage. I would have to move to an assisted living complex if I didn't have him.

But,of course, I'm still in charge and do all the financial management!! ;0))

It does not bother me, i buy the Creamfields cheese slices and they are ok.

MissTerious, I can see the usefulness of those ready meals delivered directly to your home to be pinged in the microwave, I imagine they are a big help to some. Not sure of the nutritional value or how budget friendly they are, though.
The traditional meals on wheels service provided much more than a hot meal, sadly missed in the community

NJ I also have a cheese allergy and have never met anyone else who has! I cannot abide the smell and if it is cooking eg cheese on toast I cannot stay in the room as I begin to heave and have trouble breathing. In Finland I was given a plain hotdog (so I thought) but it had liquid cheese running through the middle and I nearly passed out!

Convenience always costs, on the plus side you are not paying for the waste when you buy ready chopped/prepped
