HELP! My watermelons alive!
127 Answers
Hiya, earlier I bought a watermelon from the market and put it on the floor when I got home and noticed it rocking slightly which was strange as the house was quiet and no sign of any music or large vehicles or anything and the floor is level as I checked with my boyfriends spirit level to check I wasn't going mad! so I pushed it with the mop to inspect the outside to make sure a family of wasps, rats or voles haven't somehow got in but there are no marks whatsoever on the outside. I picked it up and immediately dropped it into the laundry basket as there was definitely an angry humming and rattling noise coming from inside the watermelon. I've now taken it out to the far side of the garden in fear in case something breaks out of it. My friend is coming over and wants to put a video camera on it, chop it with an axe and run but I'm not so sure as if there are creatures inside from other lands and we let them loose on the countryside who knows what kind of ecological mess we could cause so my question is what to do? Call the police, zooologists? What would you do?

I made sure everything was turned off - was it the clock? no!
was it coming from the frig? freezer? (ice-making machine)? no!
my computer/printer hook-up? no!
cable/internet/router? no!
as i continued to listen in, i approached my (several days purchased - not opened yet) watermelon.
It was still in it's heave-duty recyclable tote - which i use to carry heavy grocery items - such as the watermelon.
i was afraid to look!
i peered in.....and i could see it was already rotting on the bottom (or so i thought -- my watermelons usually don't rot -- and especially only days after purchase)
i peered in again -- (what IS that noise????!!!)
and then i could see it -- something was INSIDE the melon -- either frantic to get out -- or just eating its way out!
FREAKED ME OUT!! AHHHHH!!!
what to do?!
i was so freaked out -- and i did NOT want to know what the heck was making that noise?
what if it's alive?
what if there is a whole family of whatever it is in there! AGHHH!!!!
tho i was mightily tempted to somehow get the melon out of my prized recyclable bag (this one has extra wide straps and is extra large -- it's soooo handy!!) - i was not about to chance it.
i got out a big black garbage bag and set it outside.
then i took the recyclable tote and ran it outside and shoved it hurriedly into the big plastic bag and tied that sucker up and good!
i set it out for pick-up -- which thankfully -- was to come only in a few hours this morning (yesterday, actually).
I really didn't want to see what was in there and still am not sure it was the best idea to go searching on the internet for a possible answer - - but that's how i came across this post.
while i am somewhat disappointed the original poster hasn't come back to finish her story -- i am also somewhat relieved.
i still don't know what that horrid scratching/buzzing sound was -- and maybe that is for the best!
(ps....i got my watermelon at Aldi's -- a discount grocer -- and I always check when i get home to see where my melons are from (ie: california or mexico usually - not sure i've seen any other labels) but didn't this time since it was still in the tote. but it definitely left a mess - because as I picked up the tote - there was a large amount of liquid beneath it. i've never had a watermelon rot out that quickly -- so i do think there was definitely something inside -- and i always inspect my melons at the market -- i'm pretty sure there were no visible markings -- i'm just so grossed out and will now only get my produce from my usual larger -- and more expensive -- local grocery chain. it's where i nearly always shop....but just discovered Aldi's recently and had stopped over to take advantage of some seemingly good buys.)
