however you say it it's tough.
I think 'put to sleep' IS the nice way of saying it. Destroyed, euthanased, knocked on the head, well none of them really do it for me.

Maybe you could use the one that always grates on me - letting them 'cross rainbow bridge'.
Late night one night at a clinic (or so I have been told) there was a woman undecided about euthanizing her dog, even though it was in obvious distress. The receptionist, tired, hungry and wanting to go home told her that God was calling her dog back to Him, and he wanted him back NOW! I love that story. I like "moving on" personally.
I prefer to say they have gone to rainbow bridge ...
Depending on the age of the child being told - we preferred/prefer to say to little ones:

"It's time for the pet to be put to sleep & let the Angels look after it.

(I know not everyone believes in Angels, but I'd like to think they're looking after my Mum, Dad & any other loved ones we've lost).
