Someone I know has District Nurses call regularly.,  Yesterday he went to answer the door to her, she took one look at him and said 'Oh, you're a man.  I can't touch you' - and went away again.    Firstly, his name 'William' which should have given some indication of his gender before she arrived, and secondly why on earth is the NHS employing people who refuse to do the job?  It gets not curiouser and curiouser - just barmier and barmier.

I hope he's reported her. Silly woman. Is it a regious thing on her part?

If that is the case, assuming we have all the facts and there has been no misunderstandings, he should take it up with the nursing team/ service provider, as treatment cannot be witheld due to gender.

Question Author

I don't know what he's done about it - probably nothing.

Does there not need to be 2 nurses if the person they are seeing is the opposite sex?

Question Author

Sorry, LB.  Presumably it was a religious thing.  He said she was Muslim.

I've not heard of that, Ken.  He only ever has one nurse coming to him.

The other side of the coin. When Inwas working in NYC we had alot of arab patients. A menstruating nurse could not take care of men!!!

why on earth is the NHS employing people who refuse to do the job?  It gets not curiouser and curiouser - just barmier and barmier.

refusing to work ? Nope generally have protocols and restrictions. and on a bad day they surround themselves with protocols telling them they can't work - not bammy at all,

and here it involved sex gender chaperone - wh he cd have cut thro - by saying - you can treat me

He certainly should have rung the service provider and alleged they hadnt done their stuff and so shouldnt be paid, AND asked for a team  that CAN work.

NYC

so she went up to the arabs and said - hullo I am meant to treat you , but I am menstruating. You ddont mind that do you? otherwise it is byeeee! ?

I had a Jewess refuse to shake hands with me, and I really DID think 'oh Gawd' !

🙄

Are they still called  "district nurses"?

I'm surprised that it's not been modernised to "Local Community Health Care Professionals".

Inclusivity and diversity I'd more important than being willing or able to do the job, especially in the public sector.

We have district nurses visit, usually on their own but they are never alone with the patient. They are still called district nurses in my area

I know nothing of district nurses but I had the experience of a female Asian doctor asking if I wouldn't rather see a-and I kid you not- 'boy doctor' when my visit required a light fondling of the gentleman's vegetables.

Having already waited weeks I replied that no, I was quite happy for her to go ahead so she popped off and got one of the admin to stand in the room behind the curtain while she tried to remember some of the stuff she studied so hard to learn and regain some semblance of professionalism.

The result was an all clear for me and a raised eyebrow for her.

'The gentlemen's vegetables' - omg that made me laugh!
