19" monitor set up

I've just bought a 19" monitor for my PC and in my rush to buy as it was a good deal on ebay i didn't notice it was widescreen. I've plugged it in and it works ok however it just stretches my windows so I don't get to see more of the windows I have open which was the purpose of the purchase. Can anyone tell me f I can alter any configurations so I can use the extra space more effectively. Thanks

Right click the desktop and choose properties. Click the settings tab then alter your screen resolution to one that fits.
