Why do periods hurt? Not a rhetorical question although I am feeling very sorry for myself, but biologically what makes periods hurt and cause backache etc?

i always thought it was to do with the release of different hormones.
when i was pregnant i had spd - symphsis pubis dysfunction, that was caused by my body releasing too much of the hormone relaxin - think that's what it's called. now when i'm due on my hip area and pelvis/pubic area hurt too, which again i'm assuming is for the same reasons - because of different hormones and chemical changes.
but i'm probally talking aload of crap and lying haha :D
