Anyone know the origins of the process of awarding medals in recognition of a particular acheivement, or loyalty. How far back does this 'ceremony' go?

Ever since the powers-that-be figured it was cheaper than giving out a cash reward.
Since time immemorial..back to the 4th Century BC when Alexander the Great sent Jonathon a Golden Button for leading the Hebrews to help him in battle....apparently !
