There is no legal requirement whatsoever for British citizens to have a passport to enter the Republic of Ireland. Never has been.

However, if you are flying, the airline will want to see some official form of photo identity. A passport is usually the best option, failing that, a photo driving licence. Check with the airline to be certain.

Airlines flying from UK to Ireland ask for some sort of photo ID. This can be a passport if you have one or the new photo driving licence is also acceptable.

Ireland might be a 'foreign country' but it happens to be the only one which the UK has an 'open border' policy with. UK citizens do not require a passport to enter Ireland.

However, all airlines require passengers to have acceptable photographic ID. The rules vary; some airlines are more flexible than others. For example, Ryanair will only accept a passport or a driving licence (with a photo):

Other airlines are more flexible regarding the types of photo-ID that they'll accept. (Check the airline's website, or phone them, to find out what they'll accept).

Depends how you are travelling there. I travel to dublin twice a year from England by ferry or speed cat and have never needed my passport. Indeed the last time I did not take it at all.

However since 9/11 some airlines do insist on you showing them your British Passport.

Make sure you have some form of photgraphic ID however such as driving license.
