A tip I've heard from a couple of different people who've toured out there recently is that if hiring campervan for a few weeks in NZ to hire in the South tour around and leave it in the North. Apparently it is a LOT cheaper to do it this way round as the majority of folk hire in North tour down and leave in South. Assume the saving is because otherwise the companies have to arrange for vans to be transported back up North to balance the demand. I couldn't put an exact price on the saving but I'm told it can really be quite substantial. Worth looking into anyway.
