Hi, I am from Newcastle and have flown to the States each time from Heathrow or Gatwick. Of course I would have preferred Newcastle but like you found out, from Newcastle it is much more expensive. I,m afraid if you want reasonable prices for flights you will have to be prepared to fly from Heathrow or Gatwick.
The only direct flights to the USA from Newcastle (according to the Newcastle Airport website) are with ThomsonFly. This is a weekly service to Sanford and therefore not of much use to you.

So you're forced to fly via a European hub airport, such as Heathrow, Dublin or Amsterdam. The best choice might be Dublin. You can get there really cheaply with both Ryanair and Aer Lingus. (However, Aer Lingus doesn't show the route in their schedules after this summer and Ryanair haven't yet published their summer 2008 schedule. Remember, also, that if you use a 'point to point' budget airline to connect with another flight, you need to build plenty of connection time into your schedule because the 'point to point' operator won't help if you miss your connection).

Assuming you can get to Dublin cheaply, Aer Lingus offer an inclusive return fare to JFK, on most dates during the period you specify, for 624 (about 430). There are cheaper fares on a few dates. Alternatively Continental will fly you to Newark, on most of your required dates, for an inclusive return fare of $776 (about 390).

Alternatively, try KLM. They'll fly you from Newcastle to JFK (via Amsterdam) for an inclusive return fare of around 490. Using that option eliminates the worry of using a 'point to point' budget operator to connect with another flight.

May 2008 with Air France via Paris 495
you might like to keep an eye on these people for special prices. Only go from Gatwick at the moment to NYC (though to Canada from other airports)

Sorry, There Is No Flights To/From JFK From Newcastle, You Will Have To Get A Flight From A Major Hub, Such As London-Heathrow Or London-Gatwick. If You Do That, There Are Flights. Or If Not, Try Going To LGA Or EWR (LaGuardia) or (Newark,NJ) Newark Is Not So Far From New York And LaGuardia Is Right By Downtown NY.
