Is this a golden opportunity for moderate Islam to show their credentials? Lets see some Imams and others protesting on the streets about how the Koran has been misinterpreted etc, and the mis treatment of this woman. Like that's going to happen.

Of course, a golden opportunity for moderate muslims to take the streets to denounce this behaviour. It's what we'd bo a proud Brits, after all.

I lived in Brussels in the mid 80s when English football hooliganism was at its peak. In the northwest of the city, at the Heysel stadium, rioting by a minority of Liverpool supporters claimed the lives of 39 Italian supporters.

I remember that that week the well-behaved majority of English football fans took to the streets, in Brussels and throughout Europe, to send out a message that they denounced the actions of this hateful minority.

It was actually quite moving to see this groundswell of responsible, law-abiding activism from a much-maligned group.

Thinking about it, I don't remember that at all. Because it never happened. Shame on us.

If somebody gets arrested for calling a teddy bear (an affectionate artifact) Mohammed, and may get horse whipped and imprisioned................what punishment would I recieve if I went to one of the vicious countries and said

Gillian Gibbons had gone on an adventure to Sudan when her marriage broke up and was trying to start a new life. It is cheap to live there and teaching jobs are available to people with a degree.

Looking online today, the response of Muslims appear to fall into one of three categories. Group One unreservedly condemn the arrest and furore. Group Two see the arrest and flogging as a necessary punishment for a terrible crime. Group Three think the teacher must be punished but not as harshly as flogging or detention.
It's refreshing that there are many from Group One floating around. But I wonder how many organised groups wholly condemn the hysteria and harshness shown by the Sudanese government? Certain British Islamic groups who are usually rentaquotes when it comes to islamic issues (unless it pertains to women's rights) have been silent. I may be wrong. But yes, if British Muslims care anything about their reigion's PR, then it would be a good time to come out and show some colours. If the radicals can cobble together enough people for mini riots and placards, why can't the liberals?

As far as I've been able to ascertain, most moderate muslims ARE objecting to this woman's treatment, loud and clear ( turn on your TV and have a look, or try reading something that doesn't have 'Daily Mail' splattered across the front of it).
You will never eradicate the minority of relgious zealots in ANY religion, and this person, unfortunately for her did break the law where she was living.
I regret deeply that she will have to pay what is considered here to be a very high price for what may have been simply foolishness and ignorance, but should we turn that around and say 'okay well foreigners are exempt from laws of whatever land they live in'?
