A reported 18,000 rank & file police officers marched through the streets of London, what a disgrace.
What is this country coming to why was this allowed to happen?
Why were they not given a good kickin, in order to get back to their station in life?

The protest wasn't so much about the amount of the rise - it was the way in which the government referred it to independant arbiration and then still refused to go with the findings when it didn't suit them.

I think the key to it all is that if the government want to treat the police pay scheme the same way as all other public sector employees then make them employees and give them the rights of other employees.

Police are not actually employed - they are sworn in.

They don't have the right to strike, they don't have the right to refuse overtime, they don't have the right to say "no I'm not working tomorrow it's my day off".

They do get a good pension - but they pay 11% of their salary and get no employer contribution

They do get good overtime rates, but have no choice most of the time as to whether they work it (in fact they miss out on the 1st half hour of overtime anyway because it is seen to be "part of the job").

You did say a deal is a deal (more or less) and it is, I just wish I could see more coppers earning their pay instead of driving round playing with their phones all day.
They were each given �25 expenses by the Fedaration and the trains were laid on for free too (well they did'nt have to buy a ticket).

btw MPs aren't classed as employees either but that is where any comparison with the police in regards of pay, pension, allowances and time off should be halted.

Should the armed forces now take to the streets of London for more pay? They are not as well paid as the Police and those serving out in the war zones face much more danger than the police.

No body has mentioned the very nice pension that they receive when they retire, at a much earlier age than other workers.

If this protest had got out of hand, would their on-duty colleagues gone in with their batons?

Just for the record. Per head of population Scotland is 3rd behind Northern Ireland and LONDON as to how taxes are distributed in the UK.
