Backing up work on a laptop

I have just purchased a laptop and installed microsoft office 2003, i need to back up my work on disc but it wont let me, its them cd-r thingies but the pc keeps saying something about not registering the d-drive and telling me to contact the administrator!! have i forgot to do something obvious or is something broken or what!! please help! xx

i'd take it back or phone the helpline of the brand of laptop it is.  the laptop should identify that there is a d drive. can you see that the d drive is present when you go to my computer?
