I downloaded Spybot's Search and Destroy but it seems to get stuck during the 'Fix the problems' action.  When I look on ctrl+alt+del, it shows that the programme is not responding.  It downloaded fine and the first time I used it, it was fine.  The next time, it took me several goes to get it to complete the 'fix' action and tonight it has got stuck every time.  The blue progress line across the bottom of the screen shoots three-quarters of the way across the screen and the little egg timer comes up - then nothing.  Any suggestions

I would make sure that all available updates are installed,  then try again. Failing that, reinstalling may fix the problem. If you still cant get it going properly, i recommend ad-aware. I use this all the time, and it finds stuff that spybot s&d doesnt. Hope this helps. PM
It does hang: I've left it over half an hour to run. Be patient! I would run both adaware and spybot. And PM is correct: get the latest updates for both.
I have found that when it sets a systeme restore point while doing the fixes, a message box comes up underneath the visible ones asking "do you really want to fix ## problems". By doing a 'show the desktop' you can get to see the message box and click OK
