moulting dog

Someone suggested that I try using a tool called a firminator on my dog to help reduce the amount she moults. Has anyone used one? It looks a bit of a lethal weapon and I was wondering if it is worth buying one.

I have a golden labrador and he is forever moulting. I find if I just use ordinary dog brush I just get top hair off and if he still brushes against me I still have lovely pattern left on my black skirts or trousers but now I use a wire brush which the one I have is really meant for cleaning suede .When you have used it the first time you will get loads of loose hair out but then use it daily and just a small amount comes out and no hairs left on clothes.I personally wouldn't waste my money on these gimmicks but its personal choice.

Even a wire slicker brush will help, although they don't reduce the amount they moult they make it easier to get it out. The moulting is a result of the quality of the food, the conditions the dog lives in and the frequency of the grooming. The furminator is not a lethal weapon but needs to be used correctly.

IMO dogs should 'drop' their coat only once or twice a year, although they will lose hair to a certain extent all year round, but not excessively.

My 'teenager' is just blowing his coat for the first time, I stripped him out, bathed him, then dried him with a blaster which blew out the remaining loose undercoat. He now looks like a different breed of dog...LOL !, but his skin is clean and fresh to start growing his new wardrobe.

I think a good diet and adequate oils on a daily basis are necessary to avoid excessive moulting.

I bought a furminator, the cat will let you use it, but our moulting shar pei wont, he will only let you use a grooming mitt or an ordinary ladies paddle brush, dont think I havent tried.

Never heard of one of those. On short haired dogs I use and old hack saw blade it works wonders but don't use a new one.
