so home secretary jacqui smith is to launch a ''shock'' tactic and get the authoroties to take thugs who carry knives to hospitals and show them the effects that a knife inflicts on a victim,is this the best they can do to tackle the problem?...its laughable....does she think that these thugs will even bother to turn up?..a zero tolerance approach is needed....or else we will see more news of people being stabbed to death in the uk...and i mean the carrying of a knife in a public place is a mandatory 5 year jail sentence...end of story....

Yes, that's true. You do know yourself better than I know you. Nevertheless, as so often happens, people think differently when an imagined scenario becomes a reality.

Which is why I said probably - you are the one giving an imagined scenario. Of course I don't know how I will react - would I be able to forgive my attackers? I hope so - others certainly have been able to - but I may not.

All I can state is how I hope I shall react.

Interesting how you ask me for my opinion, and if it is not what you want it to be, intimate that I am wrong. Why bother asking for a personal opinion?
....because he was scared for his own life.

How odd! On the one hand you defend the kids who carry knives, and then you tell me that they are scared for their lives. Where's the logic in that? The only reason kids are scared for the lives is because kids carry knives and no one makes any concerted effort to stop them.

Vic, I was brought up on a council estate - so make no mistake - I know all about council estates and the kids that run around in gangs.

I am not saying (and never have said) that this knives are not a problem that need to be dealt with.
I am simply saying that with some of these youths, they are a victim of circumstances, and helping them can be better that just writing them off.
Fine, I agree. But how are we going to do that right now, and at the same time prevent more kids being killed? This problem needs to be addressed at the grass roots - when the kids are young, and before they join gangs. However, in the meantime the soft option isn't going to help those already brainwashed with this terrible mentality - and neither is it going to help their victims.

I do agree that some are beyond help and we need to come down hard on them. Hallelujah!
When more kids are injured or murdered, will you, with your soft approach and excuses, be happy to accept your share of the blame?

This is a nonsensical question - you start of with the premise of 'when'. You are stating that this won't work and you cannot possibly know that.

Yes, I start with the premise 'when', because I have no doubt that we haven't seen the last of it - and I'm pretty convinced that the soft approach won't work because we've had years of it, and the problem is very clearly getting worse. It is not a nonsensical question. It's simply an uncomfortable question for people like you. I make no apology for intimating that those who defend these thugs and keep them on the streets are, in effect, partly responsible for the crimes they go on to commit They are allowing it to happen.

You asked me why I thought thugs would be left roaming the streets. My links demonstrated that this is happening.

Interesting how you ask me for my opinion, and if it is not what you want it to be, intimate that I am wrong. Why bother asking for a personal opinion?

Well, since you ask for my personal opinions too, but nevertheless intimate that I am wrong, it seems the same applies to you, so I fail to see your point. Surely that's what debate is all about?

It seems it's time to agree to differ on this one.

Tetjam, do you have a son, and is carrying a knife going to prevent him from getting beaten up?
I'm sure we will debate again soon.

Yes, I'm sure we will. In the meantime, if you have any more films to recommend, bring 'em on.
Scum?

;-)
