After abandoning the idea for a holiday abroad I now have the task of entertaining the chidren for all of next week and don't wish to simply spend it at home as it will be wasted.
I am looking for ideas/suggestions as to where to take the children (aged 5 and 17months) for a few days away or a recommended area in the UK to take them where there will be things to do/see.
Any accomodation known of in these areas will also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Might be an idea to tell us where you are based and how far you may want to travel.

Our suggestions will be somewhat different if you live in say Aberdeen than if you live in say Exeter.

It may be worth visiting your local library of look on the website of your local council to see if they have set anything up for the school holidays.

More and more councils are providing things to do for children (and adults) during the summer break.

Hi-sorry based in South Wales but do not mind travelling to anywhere in the UK except Scotland.
Oi, What's wrong with Scotland? I've just been to Cardiff; Fairs fair, you should come up here! : )

Nothing at all it's just that II have already been there and it may be too far to travel with an infant.
Was only teasing you,ct. It is a long trek and I wouldn't fancy the trip with a little one. Hope whatever you end up doing you have better weather than we've had up here. Enjoy your holidays.

Might get some day out ideas from that. Hopefully some more people from 'down south' will give you suggestions for short breaks.
Noah's Ark Zoo Farm is just over the Severn Bridges from you:

A trip on the Brecon Mountain Railway might be fun:

Your local leisure centre might be able to offer something but Wale's biggest indoor waterpark is the 'The LC', which opened earlier this year in Swansea:

Thanks for the replies, the mountain railway is about 1 mile away and my 5 year old has been on it numerous times already. I am willing to travel just to get away for a few days and book 1 or 2 nights in a hotel etc so a little further away would be appreciated if there are any more answers......
Take them down to Woodlands Park near Dartmouth in Devon. Our four year old grandchildren loved it. Plenty of soft play areas, rides, slides and a petting farm, and I believe you can camp there as well but check that out. One of the best we have been to with little children. While you are down west pay a visit to the aquarium in Plymouth as well. So much to to down there. I live in South Wales and often go down that way to visit the grandchildren - just a three hour journey.

Excellent, that's more like it, somewhere further afield where i can book some accomodation and make a 2 day trip out of it.
I will look up the details on the web for that place as it sound just the job.
Any accomodation, eateries too in the Dartmouth/plymouth areas for a bit of good pub grub?
Some people may sneer, but with young children like that I think a holiday camp can be great.

It is safe, there is usually loads of entertainment, and also other families and children to mix with.

I know it can be expensive in August but maybe you can get a late booking for Monday to Friday at Haven, Butlins etc.
