I'm analysing the WW1 poem Praematuri by Margaret Cole.

What does Praematuri actually mean, I can find no translation?

Ive tried Italian, French,Spanish and Latin with no luck, but it looks like premature.

praematurus is latin for premature according to my dictionary, but dont know why it ends in i

It seems to mean 'pre-term' or 'premature' as in a baby, but in the context of the poem it seems to be a term used or the young people who are prematurely dead in the first world war.

i is a Latin plural ending; us is the singular ending. Premature babies are born before their time is due; I'd guess war victims die before their time.

I confess I've always thought it referred to people who had become old before their time. i.e. young boys who saw and did dreadful things while still in their teens.

Although quite why I thought it is lost in the mists of time
